Facebook will offer free email accounts now. With 500 million users they stand poised to overtake the leaders in email: Gmail, Y! mail and Hotmail. The question is if people want that kind of integration with their very personal email lives. Imagine being able to search an email address with results being everyone you know on Facebook. How many times have some idiots posted politically incorrect photos and tagged you in the background? Now imagine those results coming up in a search on your email address.

A hospital employee posted critical comments of her superiors on her Facebook wall to other fellow employees and got sacked. Now the government is saying she was wrongfully fired and is bringing her employers to court. Their line is her personal Facebook account is protected speech and should be treated the same as “water cooler” chit chat. Now imagine what kind of damage employees could do with well crafted “private” campaigns protected federally on lets say something like position votes, budget decisions, personnel shuffles, or even executive reviews. Where does the privacy end and the gossip begin?

Security and encryption for Gmail via Firefox extension
So you’ve got your mail client all setup using some kind of key based encryption, and all is dandy until you are out and must access some email with nothing but a browser. Everything turns up as gibberish.
Along comes Sean Leonard of SeanTek® and Richard Jones with a neat firefox extension called Gmail S/MIME. Install this addon (the Fox must restart) and then open those gibberish emails. If your keys are installed in Firefox’ key manager then woalla, with a bit of magic the emails will decrypt right in the browser.
According to the site, key validation is coming soon, so you can see if the key really comes from a reputable source.
I am still waiting for a mobile solution for iPhone.
