LiveCams: Best camera monitoring app for iPhone/iPad

I have tried (and paid for) over 5 separate camera monitoring apps for my IP cameras and have come to a conclusion: LiveCams by Barry Egerter RULES!! I don’t want to make this an app bashing post, so instead of calling fault to the other offerings, Ill list the awesome features of Livecams.

While it has a free/open/public camera viewing function that reads from a fairly well maintained list, this is not the true strength of LiveCams since there a couple other Apps that handle this as well (if not better). LiveCams strength is in its role as a surveillance tool to monitor IP cameras. There is a feature to turn off this voyeuristic public camera tool if you are not inclined to perv out looking for topless women on bikini marked beach cameras.

LiveCams is the first App to have native support for most cameras every made, even the obscure ones. I have not come across a camera it doesn’t support yet.

There is an awesome function to export/import settings I have not seen anywhere else. This is especially helpful if you have both an iPad and an iPhone. Perform the tedious task of setting up ur cameras on one device and export to the other one. Very handy!

The PTZ controls are smoother and laid out better, there are camera position presets that work nicely, and best of all….. its one of the cheapest Apps available. 0.99 for iPhone and 2.99 for iPad. It doesn’t get better than that.

Convert .chm to .pdf

I had a stack of chm manuals that I needed to plow through and after a little searching I found ichm by Robin Lu that works awesome wicked. There is an option under “File” that  is labeled “Save as PDF”! Abracadabra!! No muss no fuss. After conversion, I can fire them over to my iPad (using GoodReader) or to my Sony Reader. From what I can see on Robin’s blog, its available on the AppStore as well. This way you can just read the chm files directly on your iPhone or iPad. I like to keep things uniform so the conversion feature is the dogs ballocks. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites

iPhone Multitasking doesn’t work

So after the initial excitement of IOS 4, the cold hard truth has settled in. IOS 4 s’ much touted multitasking support is limited at best. At least in its current state and at this time. I fired up some of my favorite apps and even with the fancy window switching graphic effects, they don’t stay open as I anticipated. A search for answers turns up an answer from Apple that states that only supported apps will use this function and that each app developer is responsible to build support into their respective apps. Quoted from theosmblog.com

On the iPhone 4, multitasking doesn’t mean every app can work fully in the background. To prevent a disastrous drain on battery life, Apple has allowed only certain apps to fully multitask. These include streaming audio services like Pandora, which keep playing music from the Web while you do other things, and voice-prompted navigation apps, which keep working while you’re on a call. Others that fully work in the background include Internet calling apps, and those that perform long downloads.

But some logical candidates, such as Twitter and Facebook, merely pause in place when you switch away from them. You can get back to them quickly, and they update more rapidly than before, but they don’t constantly update in the background. They only wake up in the background if you have set them to notify you of an update, and then only for a limited time. Apple says constant fetching of hundreds of social-networking updates in the background would kill the battery too quickly.

Bummer big time. Some of my essential apps that I found not to work (that “load” each time you switch to them) are:
  • Skype (…signing in…. every time)
  • Last FM (music does not play when in the background)
  • Sandstorm (game does not pause and opening video and loading required each time its active)
  • iAWS Manager
  • SplashID
  • Groundwork
  • Dropbox

iPhone 4 coming June 24th

Its official. The leaked and hyped iPhone 4G will be called the “iPhone 4″ and released in 3 weeks by Apple. The specs are what we saw on the ‘lost’ model: forward facing camera, more memory, faster processor, higher capacity battery and slimmer footprint. Apple explained the screen is of a higher quality with greater resolution and called “the retina display”. Of course the iPhone 4 will ship with the new OS which iPhone renamed “iPhone iOS 4″ which introduces multitasking and a host of other upgrades from iPhone OS 3XX. The iPhone 4 will most probably not have 4G capabilities since Apple announced its staying on the AT&T network (their contract lasts another 2 years) which is only running at 3G speeds with no announced plans for network upgrades. The next few months will be a good time to snag some iPhone 3GS’s on the cheap as users dump them for whatever they can get to upgrade to the newer model. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites

Put a camera on the iPad…

Getting photos onto the iPad is seamless enough with a slew of wireless options and online file transfer points but to snap the photos directly now works particularly well by linking an iPhone (in this case only the 3GS) and using the iPhone’s camera remotely. The iPad becomes a large viewfinder. Think of all the spy fun you can have (behave guys!!!). Yusuke Sekikawa’s (vanishlab) Camera-A and Camera-B is simple, effective and cheap. For .99 cents download and install each version on your iPhone (3GS) and iPad (A on the iPad and B on the iPhone) and you’re done. The apps find each other instantly when both are running and there is no need for pairing or ‘finding’ each other. I have not tried to fire up 2 iPhones (3GS only remember) with B running to see which one it works with or if it indicates there are 2 possible remote cameras available. When I do Ill let you know. At its current version it worked fine for me. I highly recommend it over some of the other options out there. Camera A CAMERA-A Camera B CAMERA-B HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites
