WhatsApp: Goodbye SMS

The best things since sliced bread :) . Cut down on SMS and MMS costs by using WhatsApp. The one very cool thing about it is it integrates into the phones OS (saving and using items from camera roll and of course accessing the address book to see who else uses WhatsApp) but the real wow factor is its seamless integration into all 3 of the major mobile OS’ plus the aging Nokia platform on top of it. I guess we will see a version for the new player (WinPho) soon even tho WinPhos fancrowd is not too large at the moment.

iOS 4.1: Facetime over Wifi

According to Apple, iOS upfate 4.1 is the dogs ballocks and should be updated to all devices as soon as possible.

The most significant step forward is the support for Facetime over WiFi on the iPod Touch (newest gen). As we know, the iPod does not have a cellular radio in it so Facetime is available as an app where you call people (with compatible devices) by their email address rather than their phone number.

Does this mean we will soon have desktop compatibility as well? It shouldn’t be much of tech stretch to include it in either iChat or Skype. It will be awesome to call and video chat someone directly from the desktop while the receiving party is out and about.

This opens the door to standalone devices for Facetime calling.

Adium – Push to iPhone with Remodium

I finally found what I have been looking for…. a mobile solution for chatting. I have BeeJive and IM+ but this requires I log off my desktop sessions and re-login to my portable. If I forget to do this, sometimes Adium tries to renew lost sessions when I force interrupt by logging on my portable while logged in to my Desktop. I have mulled getting 2 separate accounts, one for desktop and 1 for portable, but thats insanity to match chats and who knows where I get my messages. Another time is when Im in bed away from my desktop, it would be pointless to have a separate account just for bed.

Enter Remodium: An awesome and soon to be elegant solution to my problems. It acts as a remote control to my current Adium session and after pairing on Wifi it works over 3G as well. It requires a plugin on Adium to work.

I say soon to be elegant as its missing a few features to really make it the shiznikle:

  • No iPad version
  • No unread message counter on iPhone homescreen icon
  • Push sequence is highly latent (can be 20 minutes…)
  • No buddy icon support
  • No status switching utility

But for a work in progress it rocks hard.
