Rowmote (Pro) vs. TouchPad: Remote control your Desktop

While I hate to take sides on software choices when both sides have created great products, it really comes down to the user (being me in this case) and how the respective Apps handle. Being a programmer I know how much work goes into writing an app and many times what we (the software developers) think are great features don’t get the same response from the end users.

These 2 apps both work well and are worth the dough they ask. In my humble opinion Rowmote Pro is the better choice at the current state of both Apps.

First of all, Touchpad took some finagling to get working and paired (firewall tinkering etc..) while Rowmote dealt with pairing by a helper installation on the desktop (a MacBook Pro in my case) that worked seamlessly on the first round.

Secondly, the media application support did not work for me on Touchpad. Regardless if I selected VLC for instance, the remote media buttons still only controlled Front Row. Rowmote works as advertised and you are able to control a wide selection of media players with standard buttons.

Thirdly, the tracking on the touchpad area seams snappier on Rowmote while Touchpad has lag and jumps.

In Touchpads favor, the touchpad area is larger than Rowmotes.

Unfortunately for Touchpad, Rowmote wins out at the current versions.

Awesome AJAX multi-platform app: Kompass for Basecamp

Basecamp is one of the best hosted collaboration and project planning apps available.

Featuring a slew of awesome options and available in a variety of plans and prices, Basecamp makes planning and project management a snap. With the public premise lurking that everything worth doing has been done on the App store, I have been disappointed in the iPhone and Android offerings for mobile access to Basecamp.

Enter Kompass: the Ajax solution that spans all mobile devices and works elegantly. User avatars, functioning todo lists and overviews work nicely and efficiently. Since its built in Ajax it scales nicely on the iPad with no problems. The only thing missing is file access (even just for viewing).

Its currently in Beta testing, so signup if you would like to participate.

Istat: I like

So the good folks at iSlayer (and Bjango now for their iphone apps) have their game face on. The new istatPro rocks. I experienced slow speed, hung cycles, lazy updates on previous versions, but after a tip from another blog I fired it up again and tacked it to my desktop permanently (see my previous post on using widgets on the desktop) and boy does it hummm along without a hitch, murmur or even mention that its there. Very nice indeed! Couple this together with istat for the iphone and what a combo. If you’re a nerd like me, you’ll love the fact that u can remotely check in on your beast at home and see vital info (or at least we think its vital…. I mean who can go thru the day without seeing the core temperature of all 8 cores as they churn thru a code compile run?).
