McAfee, Amazon: Big boys giving something back

Over this week 2 actual cash reimbursements have been made by some large corporations. McAfee: An ‘update’ that went awry threw tens of thousands of XP users into a BSOD or endless boot cycle. Police departments in the US went down and the Swedish government offices and state communications operator had to close temporarily (use Chromes built-in translate feature to read in English). Winos also had to wait until the repairs were done as the State Alcohol Monopoly (only place to buy liquor legally) had to close following the McAfee initiated crash. PC Pro reported that McAfee is offering reimbursements on reasonable costs to repair the problem. I guess the question remains, whats reasonable? Sony PS3: Sony updated the firmware to the PS3 removing the possibility to boot into other operating systems. Of course users may skip the update, but this will cut them off from playing on the Sony online network. So far they have offered an apology but have already been sued as a result. iAWSManager: A must have for any EC2 administrator

An absolute must and well worth the 4.99 they ask for this app. The latest update introduced Cloudwatch Monitoring (although this feature could be more streamlined to a snapshot). The tagging feature (custom tags per instances in EC2 to remind you of the box) seams to lose its content every upgrade which is not the greatest, but all in all a great swiss army knife for the AWS environment.

Intermapper: A network mapper worth using

If you use AWS (particularly EC2) then this app is for you: Dartwares’ Cloud Monitoring by InterMapper. It uses an instance (which you have to pay for) so it only makes sense if you have a larger network with multiple instances to monitor. But it really makes things simple and brings the whole EC2 network together in a visual way. One other thing, if you use the cloudwatch monitoring (which again is a paid service) this server kicks superbutt. There is a free community AMI which lets u monitor a couple instances (5) for free and this gives u the “try before you buy” option and is easy to setup and get going without any lengthy download.
