No Flash on the iPad, my first problem

(image from modmyi.com) I came across an interesting article on modmyi that mentioned a prediction most sites will start making specific Apple friendly versions of their websites to circumnavigate the Adobe-less world Apple is creating. I have been very happy on the iPad so far and have not run into many problems until this weekend. One of my favorite BBG (browser based game), BattleDawn, required some extra attention. The admin released 4 relics and there was a mad dash to grab them. I soon became tethered to my Macbook and my iPad got some sick leave as it was all but useless. I will probably have to pick up an Android and Flash friendly tablet, like the WeTab, if I truly want to start going tablet only. Pity tho, Battledawn would have been great on the iPad (although the extensive use of mouseover features, a cornerstone of Flash interaction, would be a challenge). Are we gonna start wearing Apple gear?

Apple ventured successfully into the wearable tech market many years ago with its partnership with Nike in the Nike+ line. Now it looks like Apple may be gearing up to jump into that field again. They have recently hired Richard DeVaul, a veteran of the wearable computing field and co-founder of AWare Technologies, a technology company focused on creating products for the fitness and “wellness” markets. (snippet from NYTimes blog). So what will Apple, or could Apple begin dabbling with? Portable display glasses for use with iPod/iPhone products? Non keyboard based input? Gesture based UI? One thing we do know is that Apple has been vehement about its non support of Flash. For all the pithy reasons it claims, and the allegations of protecting their media revenue stream, an answer might also be that Apple is moving away from mouse and cursor driven GUI’s in favor for touch and tap (how do you mouseover or rollover an icon on the iPhone/iPad platform?) and maybe this is a precursor to a new technology where rollover is impossible. Battledawn: Deploy, crush, rule!!

PBBG (Perpetual Browser Based Game) BattleDawn review
Flash based gaming is easy and no hassle to get going as there are no downloads and no OS compatibility issues. All you need is a browser that had the Adobe Flash plugin working. BattleDawn is cool for many reasons. Its low impact on time and concentration makes it a perfect game for busy people. The learning curve is low, strategy is easy to pick up on the fly and the current existing players are more than helpful to newbies. You don’t even have to signup to get started, just start playing and if you like it then you can secure an account. Tips: Boost (buy tokens with real money that lets you buy upgrades in-game) if you can (requires PayPal or some other payment avenue). This will help you get ahead. Build your structures for resources and people before getting too heavy into army building. Wait to build nukes, shield and Ion cannons until you are a bit ahead. Join an alliance early. Find one that is semi active and get to know the players. They will be invaluable in the future. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites

Toy Story 3 site: Made by Apple but not for fruit disciples

iPad users get shunted by being served a dumb version of the Toy Story 3 site compared to the PC/Mac version (that uses Flash)
CNN reported a funny story how iPad users were unable to view the Disney produced Toy Story 3 website for a spell until the error was fixed (something in browser detection). Quote:

That Disney website is built in Flash format, which, as screen grabs show, means it didn’t work at one point on Apple’s iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch.

Big deal, right? Lots of websites are built in Flash, and many of them don’t work on Apple gadgets (there’s a workaround for some Flash video). But it’s kind of amusing when you consider the fact that Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who has been posting lately about how much of a problem Flash is, was a Pixar co-founder and now serves on Disney’s board of directors.

So out of curiosity I went to the Toy Story site and checked out the differences on both platforms. The result? iPad users are getting b#%%f#35d. The iPad serves a real lame version in comparison. TS3 on Firefox for Mac OSX TS3 on iPad What does this tell us? Flash still holds the highest honors in web interactivity? Or Flash developers kick butt over the competition? What is the real competition? If Mr. Jobs continues to preach the evilness and pure mediocrity of Adobe Flash, what is he doing to shine light on an alternative?
