Nokia N810 – A lot of bang per buck

Having used this internet tablet now for close to a month, I can say I am well-versed in its strengths, flaws and overall usage. First of all I have to iterate that THIS IS NOT A PHONE, THIS IS NOT A LAPTOP, please don’t compare it to either (and please no posts about the N810 vs. the iphone blah blah blah! Some of us don’t like holding bricks against our ears all day long). Classification The N810 is an internet tablet. It runs a flavor of Linux so is much more powerful than most other PDAs both in hardware and software. I would class it in between a WinMo or Blackberry phone and a low end laptop. It is perfect to carry around in your pocket for when to check your mail, get online, chat, VOIP, and organize yourself. Out-of-the-box Unpacking and first impression was not bad. The device paired with my cell phone (also Nokia) with no problems and went online thru the cell data connection as if the N810 had a SIM in it directly. The weight and feel was nice, not too heavy, not light enough to fall out of your hands. All in all I was not disappointed. First disappointments After a day or 2 of tinkering I found some serious flaws. 1. The external memory cover comes out of its place whenever you use the kickstand and upon returning the kickstand to its resting position, the cover restricts it and you must push it down to complete the procedure. 2. I don’t know if this was a software flaw, but the power management was disastrous. The unit would run out of juice after 1 day which is unacceptable for a portable device. (I flashed the device using Nokia’s newest OS image and this fixed the problem. The unit now goes for about 10 days with 2-3 hours of usage per day) 3. The software provided on the device is woefully lacking. There is no PIM or word processing support. I had to install all software myself from maemo.org to make the device worth carrying around (accounting, PIM, navigation, word processing, multi-protocol VDO support etc..) Fun stuff The device plays doom, Q2 and other FPS games quite well. The key support is a little weak but you can tweak that with character keyboard mods. Hardware I have not come across any internal hardware issues. I have had to cold reboot the device twice after installing some s**ty third party software. The device runs quite crisp and zippy and definetly faster than any Winmo device I have ever used. More info to follow. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites
