Use XMind to map your projects
Posted by Erixun in Opensource on November 28, 2010
Previously I wrote about FreeMind, an opensource mind mapping software that works quite well. Enter XMind, which takes this to another level.
With some serious business features (security, collaboration, live web-based editing) in its paid version, the free one works quite well for most single user mind mapping needs.

For all you AJAX fans using the trusty jQuery libraries (which are awesome by the way), the makers of Flowplayer (a cool Flash-less media player – yes it will work on the iPad) have released their latest offering of jQuery Tools.
Bringing even more streamlined and easy ways of integrating Flash-less media and animations, transitions and data effects into your website, this toolset is a must see for any AJAX coder worth his salt.
The newest version (1.2.5) offers more effects, validations, form controls and tabbing features.

DW alternatives: Opensource comes close
Posted by Erixun in Opensource on April 4, 2010
There are opensource alternatives to Adobe Dreamweaver, but DW is still the king!
I tried the following programs:
(Komposer)
Nvu is pretty slick and easy to use. It is the lowest starting learning curve of all of the software listed here. Some features are pretty dumbed down and the lack of tag suggestions and source editing tools makes this package a little to simple for advanced java and framework based jobs.

FreeMind: Finally a FREE Mind Mapping Solution
Posted by Erixun in Opensource on February 26, 2010
MindMapping software is expensive. Some of the better ones are:
- MindJet Mind Manager $250 for Mac, $350 for Windows (Version 8 )
- ConceptDraw MindMap $200 for Mac and Windows
- Its written in Java so very cross-platform compatible (a problem addressed by many open source projects trying to write multiple versions for native OS environments)
- Almost every thing can be styled in HTML which pleases code monkeys like me very much (Tip: “Edit Long Node…”)
- A perfect balance between WYSIWYG and code manipulation
- Some hacked compatibility with the proprietary versions mentioned above
- Only 1 root topic allowed
- Lack of proper attribute management
- Clunky node placement and management
- Quirky way to select nodes (gets some getting used to)
