Another radio app – now with background play
This radio app is nothing ground breaking in tuning or layout design, in fact its a little more cluttered feeling than some of the other cleaner apps like Pandora or Last.FM.
However, this beauty shines in the fact it can stream music in the background while you work on other apps. This is something the clean boys can’t do yet. Check it out!

Net Worth Update - December Edition My net worth has edged up so very little this month. It grew from 0.16% from $181,501.19 to $181,787.61. Quite frankly, I'm disappointed. Upon further review there were a number of factors at play that made this happen: My Hawaii Trip - Though it was a relatively cheap vacation, it's...... -

Word Lens – translation on the fly, and in place
A very cool iPhone App that allows you to use the camera and see translated text in real time and in place. Its very cool when you first try it.
So far its only for Spanish and while the app is free to buy, u must buy the Spanish dictionary for 4 bucks. That decision may ruin the chances of this little app to become popular and ultimately financially successful for the producers. Paying 4 bucks a language for an app you might use once in a while is just not in the main tradition of the 0.99 apps for trivial tasks that iTunes is famous for.

Free calls between iPhones
Viber for iPhones works very similarly to WhatsApp in that it automatically checks your phone book for other Viber users. The experience is not as seamless as WhatsApp as there is no update function to recheck your contacts on the fly when someone gets Viber. There is no BB or Droid client yet, so for now its an iPhone only dealio.
The sound quality is crystal clear. There is absolutely no lag and the quality sounds like 7.1. I tried some calls to pals on the other side of the world over 3G and the quality drops a little, but still highly usable and much better than other VOIP solutions (yes, including Skype).
But best of all, the client is FREE! There are no hidden costs, no subscriptions, no CC details required to use, no signing your future away. Install, confirm your number and talk for free.

iOS 4.1: Facetime over Wifi
According to Apple, iOS upfate 4.1 is the dogs ballocks and should be updated to all devices as soon as possible.
The most significant step forward is the support for Facetime over WiFi on the iPod Touch (newest gen). As we know, the iPod does not have a cellular radio in it so Facetime is available as an app where you call people (with compatible devices) by their email address rather than their phone number.
Does this mean we will soon have desktop compatibility as well? It shouldn’t be much of tech stretch to include it in either iChat or Skype. It will be awesome to call and video chat someone directly from the desktop while the receiving party is out and about.
This opens the door to standalone devices for Facetime calling.

Rowmote (Pro) vs. TouchPad: Remote control your Desktop
vs.
While I hate to take sides on software choices when both sides have created great products, it really comes down to the user (being me in this case) and how the respective Apps handle. Being a programmer I know how much work goes into writing an app and many times what we (the software developers) think are great features don’t get the same response from the end users.
These 2 apps both work well and are worth the dough they ask. In my humble opinion Rowmote Pro is the better choice at the current state of both Apps.
First of all, Touchpad took some finagling to get working and paired (firewall tinkering etc..) while Rowmote dealt with pairing by a helper installation on the desktop (a MacBook Pro in my case) that worked seamlessly on the first round.
Secondly, the media application support did not work for me on Touchpad. Regardless if I selected VLC for instance, the remote media buttons still only controlled Front Row. Rowmote works as advertised and you are able to control a wide selection of media players with standard buttons.
Thirdly, the tracking on the touchpad area seams snappier on Rowmote while Touchpad has lag and jumps.
In Touchpads favor, the touchpad area is larger than Rowmotes.
Unfortunately for Touchpad, Rowmote wins out at the current versions.

LiveCams: Best camera monitoring app for iPhone/iPad

I have tried (and paid for) over 5 separate camera monitoring apps for my IP cameras and have come to a conclusion: LiveCams by Barry Egerter RULES!! I don’t want to make this an app bashing post, so instead of calling fault to the other offerings, Ill list the awesome features of Livecams.
While it has a free/open/public camera viewing function that reads from a fairly well maintained list, this is not the true strength of LiveCams since there a couple other Apps that handle this as well (if not better). LiveCams strength is in its role as a surveillance tool to monitor IP cameras. There is a feature to turn off this voyeuristic public camera tool if you are not inclined to perv out looking for topless women on bikini marked beach cameras.
LiveCams is the first App to have native support for most cameras every made, even the obscure ones. I have not come across a camera it doesn’t support yet.
There is an awesome function to export/import settings I have not seen anywhere else. This is especially helpful if you have both an iPad and an iPhone. Perform the tedious task of setting up ur cameras on one device and export to the other one. Very handy!
The PTZ controls are smoother and laid out better, there are camera position presets that work nicely, and best of all….. its one of the cheapest Apps available. 0.99 for iPhone and 2.99 for iPad. It doesn’t get better than that.

iPhone Multitasking doesn’t work
So after the initial excitement of IOS 4, the cold hard truth has settled in. IOS 4 s’ much touted multitasking support is limited at best. At least in its current state and at this time.
I fired up some of my favorite apps and even with the fancy window switching graphic effects, they don’t stay open as I anticipated. A search for answers turns up an answer from Apple that states that only supported apps will use this function and that each app developer is responsible to build support into their respective apps.
Quoted from theosmblog.com
On the iPhone 4, multitasking doesn’t mean every app can work fully in the background. To prevent a disastrous drain on battery life, Apple has allowed only certain apps to fully multitask. These include streaming audio services like Pandora, which keep playing music from the Web while you do other things, and voice-prompted navigation apps, which keep working while you’re on a call. Others that fully work in the background include Internet calling apps, and those that perform long downloads.
But some logical candidates, such as Twitter and Facebook, merely pause in place when you switch away from them. You can get back to them quickly, and they update more rapidly than before, but they don’t constantly update in the background. They only wake up in the background if you have set them to notify you of an update, and then only for a limited time. Apple says constant fetching of hundreds of social-networking updates in the background would kill the battery too quickly.
Bummer big time. Some of my essential apps that I found not to work (that “load” each time you switch to them) are:- Skype (…signing in…. every time)
- Last FM (music does not play when in the background)
- Sandstorm (game does not pause and opening video and loading required each time its active)
- iAWS Manager
- SplashID
- Groundwork
- Dropbox

Beejive vs. IM+ on the iPhone
![]() |
vs. | ![]() |
- You can change your nickname across all your accounts in one place. This is handy when not all your IM accounts are named the same.
- Push just works (can’t be said for IM+) seamlessly and without much lag time
- Bringing all your accounts offline or online is one tap (actually 2 but regardless of the amounts of accounts you have)
- Chat history can be purged easily
- Awesome integration with address book (contact photos etc..)
- Support for Skype
- Voice dictation (while not secure due to voice files being uploaded to Shape Services’ servers for speech-to-text is a fun gimmick and works surprisingly well for “don’t forget the milk” conversations)

Apple clamps down: Our way or the highway!!!
Apple forces iPhone platform app developers to use its proprietary development tools or face expulsion from iTunes.
Third party App development tools are now blacklisted. When OS 4 is released, the new tools released by Apple will contain hidden watermarks and digital ‘barbs’ to identify apps as being created by Apples development environment.
Apple is turning into a bigger control freak than Microsoft. While Apple defends these means as protecting the public from malicious hidden code in Apple approved Apps downloaded from its ‘walled garden’ iTunes, many open source activists and digital freedom writers are furiously blogging away on the apparent totalitarian approach Apple is heading.

Sneakpeak: iPhone OS 4.0
Steve Jobs previews multitasking, an internal ad system, 1500 new APIs for developers plus 100 new user features in OS 4.
Due out late summer, iPhone OS 4.0 will introduce some major updates some of which have raised some questions:
Internal Ad platform:
Jobs talked about feeding ads to app users. We all hope and pray this will be regulated somehow as should this be left up to developers, greedy or stupid app dev firms might start putting out some shitty aps for free overly saturated with advertisements.
Multi-tasking:
Will this be a feature spec app developers can code to or will Apple reserve the right to approve which apps get MT capabilities and which do not?
All said, Apple announcing this major update just days after the iPad launch keep Apple at the top of technologies movers and shakers list. They don’t appear to want to sit on their laurels but are moving forward on every front. OS 4 will be available for iPhones before iPad but how long in between is yet to be announced. Some Apple speculators say it will be at the same time.
Macworld magazine reports the new features in a lot of depth.
An interesting article about Googles planned mobile ad platform to be pitted against Apple can be found at MediaMemo.
