Kobo: Why are all the new readers named in baby?

Canadian firm Kobo is coming out with a 150 USD Ereader named the Kobo Reader. Tech specs boast the regulars needed in an ebook reader with some aesthetic extras like quilted fabric covers but missing the 3G or Edge wireless connectivity. Bluetooth is an interesting addition (my Sony Reader Daily could use it). Besides being a low cost reader, Kobo has launched an inhouse bookstore named Kobo Books. With the usual line ups, we’ll see if they cross the line into other verticals like magazines and syndicated content. A client is available for most platforms including mobile (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and webOS platform). Time will tell how they fair. A great article about the library from jkontherun.com. Skiff Reader: Wiff’s nice

A new upcoming reader from Skiff LLC (formerly FirstPaper) which provides content delivery as well as hardware. At first glance it looks sexy and a definite throne room must have for newspapers, magazines and other large format media. This is the first reader that boasts a flexible form (the screen is made from a metal foil – not glass apparently – and the housing is made from a silicon based plastic). However, the proposed 950-1,000 USD price tag makes it a bit of a gimmick. We’ll see in June or July when it launches what the deal is. My 100th post yeaaaaaaayy!!! Sony Reader Software Startup Hack

On Mac OS X (Snow Leopard), there is a background utility that starts up automatically upon login. This interfered with my parental controlled accounts (a frequent error popping up requiring an administrators password). I resolved this issue by deleting (backup first) the following files:
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.sony.ReaderLibrary.ReaderLibraryLauncher.plist
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.sony.ReaderLibrary.RunReaderLibrary.plist
Another login and woalla, problem solved. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites

Sony Reader Software – Not their best effort

The software available from Sony to manage ebooks is almost lame. Its available for both Windows and Mac OS X. The reason for my ‘lame’ label is firstly its lack of features and secondly its clunky design and layout. Sadly, it is usable so rather than installing a worthy adversary (namely Calibre) I end up using this polished POS. Granted if you have 5 to 50 books, the Reader Library from Sony will work fine. But if you are a serious reader and have quite a library, then it falls short of being a solution. Chief gripes:
  • Lack of document keyword searching or sorting
  • Lack of document element or metadata editing (Author, Title, Publisher, etc..). I would pay for this feature to be added.
  • Lack of program view settings memory (on Mac OS X)
  • Lack of collections sort ability
  • Lack of adding additional columns to the library sections (i.e. Publisher, Date Published, Version, Edition)
  • Lack of direct Google book project integration (currently there is a separate area and search)
  • Lack of iPhone or iPod Touch support. I would pay for this app.
Some wants:
  • An online backup feature (on a size by paying scale)
  • Bluetooth or Wifi support for syncing
  • More newspaper and magazine subscriptions available on the store

Sony Reader Daily: Used Daily

Officially the Sony PRS-900(BC), I find this reader quite an upgrade from the previous models Sony offered:
  1. Crisper (larger) screen
  2. More internal memory
  3. OS seams a tad faster
I am using this one more than my other readers due to its larger screen and easier conditions on my eyes. Many reviews online complain about the low visibility but I believe the posters are not familiar with the e-Ink technology. When used with appropriate and sufficient ambient light this device renders a pleasurable reading experience. I am increasing my speed reading pace (currently @400 WPM) through training and this device (text rendering plus page turning operations) performs well. I have taken it on a round the world trip already and using it in lounges and on airplanes so far I have no complaints. HOW TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE Related Websites
