Another radio app – now with background play
This radio app is nothing ground breaking in tuning or layout design, in fact its a little more cluttered feeling than some of the other cleaner apps like Pandora or Last.FM.
However, this beauty shines in the fact it can stream music in the background while you work on other apps. This is something the clean boys can’t do yet. Check it out!

Word Lens – translation on the fly, and in place
A very cool iPhone App that allows you to use the camera and see translated text in real time and in place. Its very cool when you first try it.
So far its only for Spanish and while the app is free to buy, u must buy the Spanish dictionary for 4 bucks. That decision may ruin the chances of this little app to become popular and ultimately financially successful for the producers. Paying 4 bucks a language for an app you might use once in a while is just not in the main tradition of the 0.99 apps for trivial tasks that iTunes is famous for.

Free calls between iPhones
Viber for iPhones works very similarly to WhatsApp in that it automatically checks your phone book for other Viber users. The experience is not as seamless as WhatsApp as there is no update function to recheck your contacts on the fly when someone gets Viber. There is no BB or Droid client yet, so for now its an iPhone only dealio.
The sound quality is crystal clear. There is absolutely no lag and the quality sounds like 7.1. I tried some calls to pals on the other side of the world over 3G and the quality drops a little, but still highly usable and much better than other VOIP solutions (yes, including Skype).
But best of all, the client is FREE! There are no hidden costs, no subscriptions, no CC details required to use, no signing your future away. Install, confirm your number and talk for free.

iPad and IOS 4.2
Posted by Erixun in Apple / Mac on November 28, 2010
What we have been waiting for has finally arrived: the IOS 4.2 for the iPad! Now they just need to update the hardware and add a front facing camera, the A4 CPU, a bit more RAM and we’re good.
I don’t know if its just me, but my iPad seams to run a bit faster after this update. Of course the multitasking (the few apps that support MT are growing) is awesome, but I like the new ability to use a more complex screen lock passcode (rather than just 4 numbers) like I can on the iPhone 4.
Other than that I have noticed a few UI embellishments and tweaks.

Apple support team is awesome
Posted by Erixun in Apple / Mac on September 20, 2010
Following up on my post Apple joins Microsoft in locale discrimination with iTunes 10 I went ahead and used the online iTunes support request form to see if/how I could resolve my problem.
Within 24 hours of sending the request I got a personalized email explaining my situation would be looked into and reassuring me that I am a valued customer and they still want to take my money (well, I embellished the last bit).
36 hours later I receive an email (from the same ‘person’) informing me that my issue has been cleared up and I am now able to add a payment option and make purchases.
But wait, thats not enough, I get another email 48 hours after that asking me if everything was alright and if my account worked properly also from the same ‘person’.
Of course everything worked as they said and I fired off a response thanking this ‘person’ for their help and concern. If this is isn’t customer support, I don’t know what is.
Overall I am very satisfied with this experience and I applaud Apple for their service and customer support.

Apple joins Microsoft in locale discrimination with iTunes 10
Posted by Erixun in Apple / Mac on September 15, 2010

Unless your computer is physically in the USA, iTunes 10 rejects all payment methods (Visa, Mastercard, PayPal) where the account is registered as being in the USA.
Under its current terms it clearly states:
The Service is available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the Service from outside these locations. Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.
So all of us who use the US store but are not currently living there are now no longer able to purchase anything. In the last 5 days my account has had the same problem. Contacting Apple has yet to produce a solution and the blogs are exploding with ire and profanity regarding this shift in procedures.
After 5 years of faithfully supporting Apples products and services my money is no longer good enough for Apple as of iTunes 10. I tried connecting with a US VPN, but no dice. I guess the technologies to verify sense the presence of a VPN or other masking device and proceed with the lockout. A US phone number, bank account, verified address and SSN is not enough to use the US store – you must BE THERE too.
Microsoft does this with their xbox live service and now it seams Apple is following them down this dark road of discrimination. Apple will pull out their picket signs of “Yanks go home!” shortly. LOL.
No solution has been found as of the writing of this post.
